Get involved! – Birdwatching and Community Tree Planting Day
We’re calling on local bird watchers and green thumbs to come along and participate at the upcoming community bird watching and tree planting and event.
Held as part of World Wetlands Day celebrations, the day is all about helping to increase awareness of the diversity, connectivity and resilience of our local environment at a highly significant wetland – Seven Mile lagoon.
Lockyer Valley Regional Council’s Environment Portfolio Councillor, Cheryl Steinhardt said Council was passionate about encouraging the community to get involved and care for our environment.
“We are fortunate enough to have such a wonderful outdoor lifestyle in the Lockyer Valley, and as a Council we want to continue to foster this as best we can.
“Seven Mile Lagoon is an amazing place with an abundance of birds including migratory species from the other side of the world.
“For us, that means doing what we can to improve our green spaces and natural environment, which is achieved through restoring and reconnecting our natural environments wherever we can.
“Community tree planting is a great chance for everyone to get involved in making a positive impact on the environment and learn something about the local area.
“We’ll enjoy an early morning birdwatching exercise led by members of Birdlife Australia and then plant an area of native vegetation beside the wetland to provide critical habitat for our wildlife.
“So, if you care about the natural environment, enjoy coming together with other like-minded people and don’t mind getting your hands dirty, let’s grow a legacy for future generations,” Cr Steinhardt said.
This is a free event, and participants are asked to register beforehand to assist with catering, as morning tea will be provided.
Participants are asked to bring sturdy shoes, including gumboots for the birdwatching activity, and appropriate outdoor clothing, gloves and a water bottle.
