Get Ready Day equips residents for emergencies

The Lockyer Valley community is now better equipped for emergencies and disasters after the region’s Get Ready Day was held at the weekend.

Hosted by Lockyer Valley Regional Council, the event brought together emergency services, community organisations and residents for a fun, interactive day focused on disaster preparedness.

Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor and Chair of the Local Disaster Management Group, Cr Tanya Milligan said the event was all about giving residents the knowledge and confidence to prepare for emergencies while strengthening community resilience.

“While Council prepares year-round for disaster and emergency events, it was great to see so many people connecting with our local emergency services and other agencies that support our community before, during and after disasters.

“Building the knowledge needed to prepare for emergencies before they happen is so important.

“When you know how to keep your family, pets and property safe, you can respond faster when storms, floods and fires happen.

“Disasters often strike incredibly quickly, and that is why planning ahead is one of the most important things people can do to keep themselves, their families and emergency responders safe.”

With 20 agencies represented, Mayor Milligan said attendees had the opportunity to access a wide range of information tailored to all ages and circumstances.

“It was wonderful to spend time talking to our residents on Sunday – and it was even better to see our community engaging directly with so many agencies in one place.

“When an emergency happens in our community, we all need to work together to protect life and property.

“Everyone had such positive feedback, with those in attendance enjoying the fun and interactive experience to learn about a very serious subject.

“Throughout the day, attendees learned about emergency planning, disaster preparedness, property maintenance, storm and flood readiness, emergency kits, and the importance of staying informed during severe weather events.

“Council thanks everyone who attended, as well as the emergency services, community groups and organisations that contributed to making the day such a success,” Mayor Milligan said.
