Council to close more public toilets at night amid vandalism wave

Lockyer Valley Regional Council will close more public toilets at night as criminal behaviour takes its toll.

Parks, Gardens and Facilities Portfolio Councillor Anthony Wilson said vandalism appears to be increasing across the region, and to reduce the impact on community facilities, Council will be closing more public toilets at night.

“The public toilets in Littleton Park, Gatton have been a repeat target lately with vandals smashing door locks, blocking and flooding toilets and lighting fires,” he said.

“Graffiti, drug paraphernalia and theft are also an increasing problem in several of our public toilets and the only way we can combat this right now is to close those public services at night.

“This has a considerable impact on the wider community as we have now closed four public toilets in Gatton at night leaving no public facilities available.”

Cr Wilson said this situation was far from ideal, especially for the homeless, and urged the community to be on the lookout for anti-social behaviour.

“We understand it will be a very small minority of people involved in this criminal behaviour, and where we have CCTV footage, we are providing it to the Police,” Cr Wilson said.

“We would also appreciate the community staying vigilant and if you see suspicious behaviour, please report it to Crimestoppers, Council or the Police.

“Vandalism is not a victimless crime. The funds we spend on repairing vandalism are funds we don’t have for improvements to a range of community facilities.”
