More choice for dog owners
Dog owners in the Lockyer Valley can now opt for a one or three-year dog registration, with Council introducing an expanded duration to make it easier and more affordable.
The changes, which came into effect on 1 July 2025, give dog owners the choice of either a one-year registration or a discounted three-year registration.
Lockyer Valley Regional Council Regulatory Services Portfolio Councillor Cheryl Steinhardt said Councillors requested the change in response to declining rates of dog registration over the past few years and to assist residents with cost-of-living pressures.
“Dog registration is a really important part of responsible pet ownership,” Cr Steinhardt said.
“Up until now, local dog owners have had to renew their pet’s registration each year, and while we are keeping a one-year option available, we want to give people the choice of a longer registration period to make it more convenient.
“Owners who opt for a three-year registration effectively get the third year for free.”
Under Council’s 2025-26 Fees and Charges, for $50 your new dog can be registered for one year if it is desexed, compared to just $100 for three years.
Owners can request a partial refund if their dog passes away during the first half of the registration period, or they can choose to transfer the remainder of the registration to a new dog.
In Queensland, it is a State Government requirement that all dogs over the age of 12 weeks are registered, with fines payable if you are found in breach.
Cr Steinhardt said it was vital dog owners registered their dogs and kept their details up-to-date so they can be reunited with their pet if it escapes or gets lost.
“Please remember to advise Council within seven days if details such as your phone number, postal address, email address, the address where your dog lives or the dog’s microchip details have changed,” she said.
“Dogs should always have their rego tag attached to their collar as well, as this will allow us to reunite them with you as quicky as possible.
