Farmers urged to register unwanted ag chemicals for collection

To protect our region’s unique environment, Lockyer Valley Regional Council is once again encouraging farmers to register with ChemClear and dispose of their dangerous agricultural chemicals in a safe way.

Council’s Portfolio Councillor for Waste, Cr Julie Reck says it is important producers and landholders correctly dispose of their unwanted or expired agricultural chemicals.

“ChemClear is a not-for-profit chemical collection and disposal service, and we are looking forward to partnering with them again to make sure unwanted chemicals in the region are safely disposed of,” she said.

“We have a strong agricultural sector in our region and storing outdated or cancelled chemicals can create serious safety and environmental hazards.

“The ChemClear program makes it easy to remove these chemicals from your farm or business and I encourage people to register early to ensure they are included in the upcoming collection.”

Cr Reck said ChemClear is specifically designed for agricultural chemicals, not household chemicals.

“ChemClear accept a wide range of agricultural chemicals, including herbicides, insecticides, fungicides and veterinary chemicals,” she said.

“Chemicals are categorised into two groups, with Group 1 being free to dispose of and Group 2 (chemicals that are unlabeled, unknown, mixed or expired by more than two years) attracting a per litre fee due to the special handling required.

“ChemClear collections are typically only held every two years so don’t miss the chance to participate.”

Farmers and landholders have until 12 September to register their agricultural chemicals.
