Sculptors sought for new art trail

Lockyer Valley Regional Council is seeking Expressions of Interest (EOI) from artists skilled in sculptural pieces for an exciting new public art project.

The commissioned artworks will be placed around the Lake Apex Precinct at Gatton to create a permanent sculpture art trail for visitors and residents to enjoy.

Council’s Liveability Portfolio Councillor Julie Reck said the 3D sculptures will reflect the character and heritage of the Lockyer Valley region, while also focusing on native flora and fauna.

“We’re looking for works that showcase the region’s waterways, landscapes and creatures that inhabit it.

“This initiative is all about transforming everyday public spaces into vibrant community hubs.

“We are looking to commission artists with a strong focus on community, and we welcome all suitably qualified and experienced artists from the Lockyer Valley and South East Queensland to put their hand up for this great chance to showcase their creativity and skills,” Cr Reck said.

Boasting a range of cultural and recreational activities, the Lake Apex Precinct was established on natural wetlands in 1975 and supports a wide variety of plant and animal life.

Visitors and residents alike also enjoy the regional art gallery and library, Queensland Transport Museum, Colonial Café, playgrounds, and walking tracks also located within the Precinct.

The project is made possible through allocated funding under the South East Queensland (SEQ) City Deal Public Art Initiative.

“Public art plays such an important role in bringing added engagement and culture to our environment and we look forward to bringing this initiative to life.

“We are grateful to the Australian and Queensland Governments for providing this funding, which is only available for public art projects,” Cr Reck said.

The South East Queensland City Deal Public Art Initiatives is a commitment under the SEQ City Deal partnership between the Australian Government, Queensland Government, and the Council of Mayors (SEQ). The $10 million initiative, funded by the Australian Government, aims to enhance place-making and promote a more liveable SEQ through Public Art and Architecture.
