Council closes rural bin site following further illegal dumping

Lockyer Valley Regional Council has closed the Junction View Rural Bin Site following further cases of illegal dumping.

The unsupervised rural bin location permanently closed from 28 August and follows a review of usage over the past 12 months and several weeks of notification to the local community, Portfolio Councillor for Waste Management, Cr Julie Reck said.

“We’ve kept a close eye on the site and unfortunately there is still a high degree of illegal dumping happening.

“There is a significant cost involved with maintaining a rural bin site and it’s simply no longer a cost-effective option to keep this site open.

“In fact, it cost Council and ratepayers $18,000 last financial year alone with the majority of waste dumped there being illegal.

“We had notified the local community of the issue and only received one submission to try and keep it open.

“Residents in Junction View have their kerbside waste collection services to utilise, and anyone who doesn’t is encouraged to contact Council.

“We’ve also had a lot of people coming from outside the region to dump waste at this site, and the cameras that were installed to monitor the area have since been stolen.

“We understand these changes may cause some inconvenience for residents and we thank everyone impacted for their assistance in helping us to manage waste effectively and efficiently.

“Our message to residents is please don’t add fuel to the fire by dumping illegal waste in other locations.

“If you do see cases of illegal dumping happening in the community, please let us know so we can take appropriate action against this illegal and disrespectful behaviour,” Cr Reck said.
