Passionate QTM volunteer wins major award

Queensland Transport Museum (QTM) volunteer Nick Stokes has taken home a top gong in the statewide Gallery and Museum Achievement Awards.

The awards, presented annually by Museums & Galleries Queensland, recognise excellence in the Queensland public gallery and museum sector, with Nick being awarded the Individual Volunteer Category.

An active QTM volunteer for 16 years, Nick has made significant contributions to the organisation, Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor, Cr Tanya Milligan said.

“We are incredibly proud of Nick and his dedication to not only the QTM, but the wider Lockyer Valley community.

“This award is well-deserved and shines a light on Nick’s timeless dedication and his ability to transport (no pun intended) visitors back in time with his moving and thought-provoking tours.

“With the new Military Exhibition currently on display at the QTM, Nick not only celebrates the history of military transport, but captures the spirit of our diggers who sat behind the wheel – helping to keep the memories of their resilience and sacrifice alive,” she said.

Mayor Milligan also praised Nick’s extensive knowledge around transport heritage, and his passion to keep it alive.

“The QTM receives tour bookings from varying demographics and Nick adapts his approach to facilitating the tour, whether he is presenting to a group of youthful scouts, international travellers or seasoned veterans.

“He continually works on ways to elevate the experience and invests his personal time to expanding his knowledge,” she said.

Council’s Tourism Portfolio Councillor Julie Reck said in the past two years alone, Nick has facilitated more than 50 complimentary group tours, leaving a lasting impression on each and every attendee.

“Nick consistently goes above and beyond to ensure the museum remains an engaging and educational destination, and we congratulate him on this very special honour.

“Without a doubt, Nick’s contribution to the QTM is a key factor in the long running success of the museum, whether it be through his guided tours, changeover and maintenance of exhibits or support behind the scenes,” Cr Reck said.

The QTM is open seven days a week, 9am to 4pm, inside the Lockyer Valley Cultural Centre, Gatton.
