Lockyer Valley Regional Council has approved changes to Laidley Library’s operating hours.
Following a review of the low Saturday morning and weekday afternoon patronage over the past year, Councillors recently approved amendments to the opening hours, which will take effect on 5 January 2026.
Libraries and Galleries Portfolio Councillor, Julie Reck said the changes would allow for a more aligned approach.
“Our staff have compiled statistics over the past year to see if it is worthwhile, both financially and logistically, to keep the Laidley Library open at these times.
“Patronage at the Laidley Library really struggled to pick back up following the COVID-19 pandemic.
“For example, an average Saturday at the Gatton Library had more than 120 visitors, while the Laidley Library had just 32.
“The changes will see Laidley Library align with Council’s Customer Service Centre operating hours and close at 4.30pm.
“Instead of opening on Saturday mornings, we’re going to trial a late-night Wednesday service, opening until 6pm, to allow for workers to visit on their way home, or families to visit before dinner.
“Council sought feedback from regular users of the Library prior to making this decision and the arrangements reflect the feedback we received.
“We appreciate this change may impact some community members, but it’s what’s needed to ensure we balance the sustainability and customer accessibility of our public services.
“Our community loves and values our libraries, and this is not a decision we have taken likely, but our emphasis will remain on maintaining access to services and balancing the budget,” Cr Reck said.
