New flood cameras installed

Lockyer Valley Regional Council has installed two new flood monitoring cameras – further bolstering the region’s preparedness and safety.

Located at strategic high-risk locations, the cameras can be found at Sandy Creek, Gatton-Helidon Road, Grantham and Ma Ma Creek, Grantham-Winwill Road, Winwill.

The new infrastructure takes the total number of flood cameras across the region to 18.

Chair of the Local Disaster Management Group, Mayor Tanya Milligan said the cameras, which captured images every 15 minutes, provided access to cutting edge flood-monitoring technology.

“The flood monitoring cameras use high resolution and infra-red technology to allow emergency services and Council to track water levels and water flow in near real time, providing early warning for flooding.

“They also allow the community to check road conditions, flood levels and impacts to better prepare for flooding.

“Our message to the community is simple – staying informed is vital when it comes to staying safe.

“Flash flooding can bring water level changes in the blink of an eye, which is why it’s so important to never drive through flood water.

“These cameras provide accurate, up-to-date information for our Disaster Management team, which also assists with emergency planning.

“In times of a disaster, our community and emergency services need to have access to timely information and our network of cameras make this possible,” she said.

Member for Lockyer Jim McDonald said that these new flood cameras are a major boost to safety in the Lockyer Valley, providing real-time information to help residents and emergency services respond quickly as conditions change.

“By investing in modern flood-monitoring technology, we’re strengthening local disaster preparedness and giving the community the tools they need to make informed, safe decisions during severe weather.”

The Winwill camera is proudly funded by the Queensland Government’s South East Queensland Community Stimulus Program in association with Lockyer Valley Regional Council, while the new Grantham camera is solely funded by Council.
