Premises secured for important community group

Lockyer Valley Regional Council has leant a helping hand to the Gatton Lapidary Club – working with the Club to secure another premises for display for this important community organisation.

In a sign of its ongoing commitment to fostering local groups, Lockyer Valley Regional Council’s Facilities Portfolio Councillor Anthony Wilson said Council has made a venue in Helidon available for lease, effective from 1 February.

“Our community organisations play such an important role in making the Lockyer Valley what it is, and this is a sign of our commitment to empowering these groups.

“The Gatton Lapidary Club focuses on sorting, collating, and (possibly in the future) publicly displaying an extensive geological history of the Lockyer Valley.

“The Club contacted Council requesting to lease the old Girl Guides building, situated on the land for the purpose of developing a local area geology display.

“Members of the Club have communicated their hope to open the facility for viewing to community groups and school groups, which would be great to see happen.

“Groups like the Gatton Lapidary Club provide support and connection to so many, which is why it was rewarding to work with the Club to make a location in Helidon available for short-term lease.

“Rather than a hand-out, Council has entered a lease with the Club where they share responsibility and some costs for the use of the facility.

“It’s given us great satisfaction to help meet the Gatton Lapidary Club’s need by offering the Helidon Guide Hut, which has been sitting vacant for a while, and we certainly hope this new premises meets their needs,” Cr Wilson said.
