International Women’s Day breakfast

The 2026 International Women’s Day celebration breakfast returned bigger and better this year, with the Lockyer Valley community gathering to honour the incredible women shaping our region.

Celebrated globally on 8 March since 1911, International Women’s Day (IWD) presents an opportunity for both men and women to come together to show their support for this great cause.

Once again hosted by Lockyer Valley Regional Council, the annual celebration of women drew more than 120 people to Gatton Shire Hall this morning.

This year’s IWD celebrations unpacked what it means to “Balance the Scales”, with the event spearheaded by guest speaker Kerri MacMahon, a local adventurer who spent more than four years circumnavigating Australia.

Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor, Cr Tanya Milligan said Kerri has worked to remove barriers, embrace possibility and create a fairer, more inclusive world.

“Kerri shared the lessons she has learned on the water and how these can open new horizons for women and girls – it was certainly an inspiring morning.

“International Women’s Day is an important opportunity for us to recognise the achievements of women in the Lockyer Valley community.

“Coming together provides an opportunity not only to celebrate, but also to foster connections and meaningful conversations about how we can support women in our community.

“It was a chance to highlight the strength, talent and achievements of inspiring women from across the region, including amazing female-led businesses, passionate entrepreneurs, and powerful voices from our community.

“Balance the Scales is all about the need for a fairer justice system, which is so important for our women and girls. They need to grow up in a world where they know they can have a voice – and be safe when they use it.

“It was great to see everyone in attendance - both men and women come together to take a moment and see that when we support one another, we can all rise together,” Mayor Milligan said.

Proceeds from local IWD raffle tickets sales went to Kintsugi Ministries, which assists highly vulnerable first-time mothers and mothers-to-be.
