Council applauds vital role of Vollies
Lockyer Valley Regional Council has today tipped its hat in thanks to its committed volunteers as part of National Volunteer Week (18 – 24 May).
Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor, Cr Tanya Milligan and Councillors joined 14 of Council’s tourism and events volunteers at a special morning tea held at Lake Dyer today.
Council’s Tourism Portfolio Councillor Julie Reck said this year’s theme of "Your Year to Volunteer" was all about encouraging Australians to make giving back a priority.
“It was lovely to gather this morning and acknowledge the vital contribution our volunteers make to our community and recognising their years of service as volunteers with Council.
“Volunteers play a critical role in our community and help make the cogs turn behind the scenes.
“If I had to pinpoint what makes volunteers so special, it’s their warmth and unwavering commitment – they really are our unsung local heroes.
“It’s what makes our community so strong and the feedback we receive from our volunteers is that they often get as much out of it as the people they so kindly assist.
“National Volunteer Week is not only a time to say thank you, but also an opportunity for those not currently volunteering to learn more about how they can get involved to make a difference.
“For many, it’s a social outlet and a chance to stay active and engaged with the community.
“We want to collectively show our immense appreciation for all that our volunteers do to help the Lockyer Valley thrive.
“Collectively, they contribute almost 1,500 hours of service each year – be it supporting community events, welcoming visitors and making the Lockyer Valley a better place, and we’re incredibly proud and grateful for their ongoing dedication,” Cr Reck said.
Council has a range of dedicated volunteers who assist the community in a variety of roles, including one of Council’s newest recruits, 84-year-old Lyn Fuller.
A resident of the region for the past 17 years, Lyn recently found herself with some extra time on her hands and in need of an interest. She now volunteers two days each week – one at Vinnies and the other at the Lockyer Valley Visitor Information Centre.
Lyn said she was so pleased she made the decision to do something for herself.
“I get so much out of it – from interacting with and meeting new people to finding out about new places – I’m enjoying it immensely,” she said.
