Council applauds outstanding community members

Lockyer Valley Regional Council has congratulated a group of the region’s finest citizens at its July Ordinary Council meeting.

BlueFit staff Annabelle Fernandez, Tanja Steed, Gemma Zischke and Adalia Griffiths, all from the Lockyer Valley Aquatic Centre, together with off-duty Gatton Police Officer Robert Katten, were instrumental in saving the life of a patron who suffered a cardiac arrest in the 50-metre pool.

When the emergency unfolded, Tanja and Adalia carried out the rescue and commenced life-saving treatment. Gemma contacted emergency services, Annabelle, who was also off duty at the time, assisted with emergency equipment, while Robert stepped forward to assist with CPR until paramedics arrived.

Council’s Mayor, Tanya Milligan presented the worthy recipients with a framed certificate as a symbol of their achievements and Council’s thanks at the Council Meeting on 15 July.

“Together, they remained calm under immense pressure and provided critical care that helped sustain the patient until emergency services could take over.

“Their actions were later commended by emergency services for their professionalism and effectiveness,” she said.

Meanwhile, Council’s Local Laws officers Andrew Schutt and Avinash Kumar, together with community member Shona Ford received praise for their assistance following a serious dog attack on a pony at Lockyer Waters.

Andrew and Avi went above and beyond their normal duties, providing immediate assistance and care to the injured animal. Shona then generously volunteered her time and resources to help transport the pony to veterinary treatment at Marburg, enabling urgent care to be provided as quickly as possible.

Mayor Milligan said Shona was under no obligation to offer her assistance – but it is clear from her actions that she has a heart of gold.

“Overall, their combined actions reflected genuine concern, teamwork and a strong commitment to helping in a difficult situation.

“Recognising those who step forward in difficult circumstances is one of the great privileges of local government.

“These people make a real difference to others and demonstrate compassion, initiative and professionalism in the face of challenging situations.

“It’s so refreshing to see people being selfless and going out of their way to help others and do something good for the community.

“On behalf of Lockyer Valley Regional Council and the wider community, I sincerely thank each of our recipients for their willingness to act when others needed help.

“It serves as a wonderful example of the community spirit that exists throughout the Lockyer Valley,” she said.
