Get Ready Day Empowers Residents to Prepare for Emergencies
Lockyer Valley Regional Council’s Get Ready Lockyer Day is on Sunday 2 August and will bring together emergency services, community organisations and residents for a fun, interactive day focused on disaster preparedness.
Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor and Chair of the Local Disaster Management Group, Cr Tanya Milligan said the event would help residents build the knowledge needed to prepare for emergencies before they happen.
“Being prepared, aware and connected makes our community stronger and able to recover more quickly when disasters happen.
“Whether it’s storms, floods or bushfires, we want to give residents tips and practical information about what to do before, during and after a disaster event.
“We know disasters can strike quickly, which is why planning ahead is one of the most important things people can do to keep themselves, their families and emergency responders safe.
“Get Ready Day is designed for all ages, with hands-on activities, expert advice and opportunities to meet the emergency service personnel and volunteers who support our community. Plus, there will be prizes to be won and activities for the kids.
“This is an action-packed event with an important message that’s not to be missed,” Mayor Milligan said.
Come and explore a range of interactive displays and activities, including:
- Emergency kit giveaways;
- Taking a walk over our giant map of the region;
- Meeting local emergency service personnel and volunteers;
- Advice from the Rural Fire Service about the bushfire risks and property preparedness;
- Cooking demonstrations using pantry items to make delicious family-friendly meals;
- Sandbagging demonstrations and practical tips; and
- Activities for the kids including games and bag to colour and take home.
Visitors can also follow the 'Preparedness Trail' to build disaster resilience skills, visit the petting zoo to learn about preparing animals for emergencies, see a display of historical Lockyer Valley disaster events, learn how to deal with snakes and other displaced wildlife, and test themselves on the giant inflatable obstacle course.
“Council staff, emergency services and community organisations will be on hand throughout the day to answer questions and provide advice,” Mayor Milligan said.
“In addition to Council, participating agencies will include Queensland Police Service, Queensland Fire and Rescue, Rural Fire Service, State Emergency Service, Queensland Ambulance Service, Laidley Community Centre, Lockyer Community Centre, and many other organisations.
“This event is only held every two years and provides a great opportunity for residents to speak directly with trusted agencies, learn about local hazards and take practical steps to become more disaster ready.”
