Ignite your reading spark at Book Week celebrations

Lockyer Valley Libraries will bring stories to life this August as they celebrate Book Week 2026.

Running from Saturday, August 22 to Friday, August 28, Book Week is a celebration of reading and Australian literature for children and young people, while recognising the positive impact books and reading have on children for life.

Council’s Libraries and Galleries Portfolio Councillor Julie Reck said Book Week was an exciting week on the library calendar.

“This year’s theme ‘Symphony of Stories’ is all about celebrating the joy of reading and the incredible journeys a story can take us on.

“The theme looks at what is required to make a book – the words, images and emotions that are blended to make a final story.

“Books hold the power to take us on a journey – be it to a different time, land or on an incredible adventure.

“Our Libraries are more than just shelves of books, they’re community spaces that offer connection and are for the whole region to enjoy,” Cr Reck said.

Library staff will also dress up for the celebration, donning costumes from their favourite books.

Cr Reck said libraries are the perfect place to find inspiration for your Book Week costume.

“Schools across the region will once again excitedly dress up for Book Week, and if you’re stuck for costume ideas, pay a visit to either our Gatton or Laidley branch to ignite the spark you need.

“Whether you’re a regular visitor, haven’t been in a while or are keen to become a member, Book Week is the perfect time to drop in, join the fun, and take home a story or two,” Cr Reck said.

The Library team will celebrate Book Week with costumes and fun and will hold a special Book Week Story Time on Tuesday, 25 August - 9.30am at Laidley and 10am at Gatton.

Children, families and attendees are encouraged to dress up as their favourite book character to join the fun.
