Every Person Counts: Council Encourages Census Participation

Lockyer Valley Regional Council is encouraging all residents to take part in the Australian Census on Tuesday 11 August, highlighting the important role accurate population data plays in securing government funding for local communities.

Conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), the Census provides the official population data used by governments to help determine the allocation of funding across Australia.

Council’s Mayor Tanya Milligan said ensuring every person in the Lockyer Valley was counted was about more than statistics.

"An accurate Census count helps ensure communities like ours receive their fair share of government funding," Mayor Milligan said.

"Every person counted in the Census helps build a clearer picture of our community and the services, infrastructure and facilities we need now and into the future.

"That includes long-term residents, seasonal workers, people in temporary accommodation and anyone else who calls the Lockyer Valley home on Census night.

"When population figures don't accurately reflect the people who live in our region, it can affect the funding available to support local roads, parks, community facilities and other essential services that residents rely on every day.

"By taking the time to complete your Census form accurately, residents can help ensure future government investment decisions are based on the true needs of the Lockyer Valley."

The Queensland Local Government Grants Commission has identified population undercount as a continuing issue for many councils, particularly in areas with highly mobile populations, temporary accommodation arrangements and other circumstances that can make census counts more challenging.

As one of Australia's most productive agricultural regions, the Lockyer Valley is home to many seasonal and itinerant workers throughout the year. The region is also home to people from a wide range of cultural and linguistic backgrounds, including many residents who may be unfamiliar with the Australian Census process.

Mayor Milligan said improving Census participation was a community effort.

"We encourage employers, growers, labour hire providers, accommodation operators, community organisations and residents to help spread the word about the Census," she said.

Residents are encouraged to look out for information from the ABS in the lead-up to Census night and ensure everyone in their household is counted on Tuesday 11 August.
