Lockyer Valley location inspires gripping new crime novel
A Lockyer Valley town will take centre-stage next month when Toowoomba author Nikki Mottram visits Gatton Library to discuss her latest novel.
Her newest title, Helidon, is the third instalment in her best-selling Dana Gibson crime series, joining Crows Nest and Killarney.
Lockyer Valley Regional Council’s Libraries and Galleries Portfolio Councillor Julie Reck said the novel’s local ties would appeal to many residents.
“How exciting to have Nikki’s latest thriller set right here in our own backyard.
“Nikki was born and raised in Toowoomba and her understanding of rural communities is second to none.
“I’m sure this story’s setting will resonate with a lot of readers in the Lockyer Valley who will enjoy hearing from Nikki directly at our author talk,” Cr Reck said.
Helidon features child protection worker Dana Gibson, who is called to attend a fatal shooting at the pub in Helidon where a bikie gang war has exploded.
Nineteen-year-old Savannah and her younger sister, Maddie, have been caught in the crossfire, and the rural town finds itself divided between two cultures – the commune on the edge of town where Savannah’s family live and an outlaw motorcycle gang.
As Savannah clings to life, Dana uncovers corruption that runs through the small town, eroding the community’s trust in law enforcement.
When Maddie, the primary witness to the shooting, goes missing and Helidon is at the mercy of surrounding bushfires, Dana must expose the truth and find Maddie before it’s too late.
Cr Reck encouraged residents to book their spot.

In addition to writing crime fiction, Nikki has a psychology degree from The University of Queensland and has worked in London and Australia in positions protecting and promoting the welfare of children at risk of harm.
