Council strengthens commitment to child safety and wellbeing

Lockyer Valley Regional Council has reinforced its commitment to keeping children safe through the adoption of a new Child Safety and Wellbeing Policy and Child Safe Commitment Statement.

The Policy was formally adopted by Councillors recently and affirms the organisation’s commitment to providing safe places and practices when interacting with children.

Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor, Cr Tanya Milligan said it was important for child and cultural safety to become embedded in the operational culture of the organisation at every level.

“Children and young people are part of every community, and they deserve to feel safe, respected and valued whenever they interact with Council services, facilities, programs or events.

“Whether it's attending a community event, visiting a library, participating in a program or using one of our facilities, children and their families should have confidence that their wellbeing is always front of mind.

“That's what this Policy is all about - it helps ensure our staff and volunteers understand their responsibilities and gives Council a consistent approach to child safety across the organisation.

“Importantly, child safety also includes cultural safety.

“We want all children, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, to feel welcomed, respected and able to participate without barriers.

“Child safety isn't something that can be left to chance - it requires awareness, clear expectations and a commitment from everyone involved.

“As Mayor, I want Council to be an organisation that takes these responsibilities seriously and continues to build a culture where protecting children is simply part of how we do things every day,” Mayor Milligan said.

The Queensland Government has introduced new child safeguarding requirements through the Child Safe Organisations Act 2024 (Qld), which applies to organisations that provide services, programs, activities or facilities involving children.

“The adoption of Council's Policy is part of meeting those requirements and reflects Council's commitment to best-practice child safety standards,” she said.
