Expansion approval for Plainland complex
The Plainland Plaza will undergo further development after receiving approval from Lockyer Valley Regional Council at the August Council meeting.
Councillors gave the green light to the proposal, which is set to include an additional 6800m2of floor area and 300 car parks, subject to conditions.
Lockyer Valley Regional Council’s Planning and Development Portfolio Councillor Dave Neuendorf said this was good news for the community.
“We’re set to welcome a 3,600m2 complex which has plans for Coles, a food and drink outlet, and 2,950m2 of additional commercial floor area for a range of shops and services at Gehrke Road, Plainland.
“The proposal will also bring with it a host of additional benefits for this growing community.
“We’ve made sure the developer will be providing all infrastructure needed to support this extension.
“The proposal involves widening Gehrke Road to four lanes, including turning lanes and signalisation of the Gehrke Road/Barcoo Drive intersection.
“A new left-in, left-out access will be constructed from Gehrke Road, which is part way between Endeavour Way and Barcoo Drive.
“Connectivity and safety play an important role in this, so new footpath connections will be provided from Gehrke Road to the development site and connected through internal footpaths to the various shops.
“The works will also include infrastructure to ensure stormwater is appropriately managed, as well as the full range of urban services including reticulated water, sewerage, electricity and telecommunications.
“Landscaping treatment will include a range of native trees, shrubs and ground covers throughout the development site, while shade structures will be installed over a portion of the parking spaces,” he said.
Cr Neuendorf said attracting investment of this scale was a real win for the region.
“This development extension will bring with it increased local jobs, spending and opportunities for not only the Plainland community, but the Lockyer Valley as a whole.
“Development of this scale offers a considerable economic boost, both during construction and once the project is complete.
“Having availability to so much retail choice closer to home will mean there is even less need for travel outside our region.
“In turn, this supports sustainable economic growth, while also delivering lasting benefits for the region,” Cr Neuendorf said.
