Share the Dignity Drive now underway

Lockyer Valley Regional Council is proud to once again support the Share the Dignity Drive, with this year’s campaign now underway to help provide essential period products to those in need.

Council partners with Share the Dignity to help supply products like pads, tampons, menstrual cups, soaps and other hygiene items to women experiencing hardship.

Council’s Mayor, Tanya Milligan said these products, sadly, are a reoccurring cost that some people struggle to afford.

“It’s incredibly unfortunate that some people in our community must choose between feeding their family or purchasing these products, especially with cost-of-living increases.

“Each year, our residents show their tremendous support to help end period poverty and we’re once again asking for the same.

“The cost-of-living crisis is seeing more people being forced to choose between buying period products and other essentials, meaning the requests for assistance are increasing.

“It’s been heartwarming to see the community’s response, it’s really incredible to see people willing to help out others who are doing it tough at the moment.”

All donated items will be provided to the Gatton Salvation Army, where a dedicated team of volunteers will make care packages for local women in need of support.

Community members can support the campaign by donating items in the marked purple bin, located in Council’s foyer in Gatton and the pink bin located in Laidley, until the end of September.

“By having these collection boxes on display, we are also helping to open up conversations and break down the stigma about periods,” Mayor Milligan said.

Items can include sanitary items, deodorants, toothbrushes, toothpaste and soaps and must be sealed in original packaging. Aerosol products, medication, food items and razors are not accepted.

The Share the Dignity Drive is one of the many initiatives Council is involved in to support the community.
