Partnership with Containers for Change encourages community recycling

Lockyer Valley Regional Council has teamed up with Containers for Change to trial an outdoor recycling initiative.

The 12-month trial is designed to encourage drink container recycling, reduce litter and benefit the local community.

The initiative will see Container Exchange Points installed across five high-traffic public locations in the Lockyer Valley region, providing a convenient way for residents and visitors to recycle their empty eligible drink containers.

Council’s Waste Portfolio Councillor Julie Reck said Council was pleased to support the trial.

“The Container Exchange Points are simple attachments to public bins or poles that allow people to leave their 10-cent eligible drink containers in a basket or rack.

“Better yet, it’s providing an easy way for community members who collect these bottles and cans to access more of them safely and respectfully.

“Instead of placing eligible beverage containers into general waste bins that end up in landfill, community members can deposit them directly into a Container Exchange Point, leading to these containers being recycled.

“These Container Exchange Points offer an accessible and convenient way for people to do the right thing while on the go and can be found in various locations in the Gatton and Laidley CBD, Lake Apex, the Laidley Recreation Reserve and Kensington Grove.

"Every eligible container returned is one less item of avoidable waste ending up in landfill or as litter in our parks, waterways and public spaces.

“We’re always looking for practical ways to reduce the amount of waste ending up in landfill, which helps protect our landfill for future generations and promotes a stronger recycling culture across the region,” Cr Reck said.
