R U Ok?
Today is R U OK? Day and Lockyer Valley Regional Council is once again supporting the national initiative by highlighting the importance of checking in with family, friends and colleagues.
Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor, Cr Tanya Milligan said hesitation can sometimes prevent people from making a simple approach to someone they are concerned about.
“It’s important to remember you don’t have to be an expert to ask someone if they’re OK – you just have to care,” Mayor Milligan said.
“If you’ve noticed someone doesn’t seem quite themselves, trust that instinct and reach out.
“It’s not just important to ask the question of our peers, but also of young people too.
“The impact of mental health in our young people needs to be taken seriously. A lot of them grew up in the COVID-19 pandemic and navigate the growing impact of social media.
“Checking in with someone is about building trust and connection over time.
“While a conversation may not necessarily resolve the difficulties someone was experiencing, it could help them feel less alone and encourage them to seek further support when needed.
“As a Council, I want to emphasise the importance of looking after not just physical wellbeing, but mental, emotional, spiritual and relational wellbeing too.
“My message is let’s work together to break down the stigma of these conversations.
“A few words really can make a big difference,” Mayor Milligan said.
To mark the day, Council buildings will be lit up yellow tonight, with staff also encouraged to meaningfully check-in with their workmates.
