Roadside spraying program supports road safety, weed maintenance

More than 29,000 litres of herbicide were applied across the Lockyer Valley during 2025-26, as part of Lockyer Valley Regional Council's roadside spraying program to support road safety and manage invasive weeds.

Undertaken by Council’s Infrastructure Works and Services team, the roadside spraying program is an important component of vegetation management and is also the most effective method for treating isolated weed infestations.

Council’s Infrastructure Portfolio Councillor Michael Hagan said Council crews undertake the treatment of Council’s priority restricted weeds on Council road reserves, as well as some Transport and Main Roads (TMR) corridors.

“This ensures the region’s roadsides remain safe and accessible, while the program also helps to manage weeds and invasive vegetation that can impact road safety, drainage and the health of local ecosystems and farmland.

“Not only does this work manage vegetation that can obstruct driver visibility, signs, other vehicles and oncoming traffic, but it also protects local infrastructure, including guideposts and other road assets.

“All spraying is conducted in a targeted and responsible manner and strategically undertaken by our crews,” Cr Hagan said.

Contractors also completed spraying of roadsides for lantana during 2025-26 at locations across Adare, Blanchview, Gatton, Helidon, Lilydale, Mount Whitestone, Murphys Creek, Postman Ridge, Preston, Rockmount, Spring Creek, Upper Flagstone, Withcott and Woodlands. Unless prevented due to traffic safety concerns, the full length and both sides of the roads were sprayed.

Council’s Herbicide Subsidy Scheme is another way Council supports landholders to manage invasive weeds on their property and meet their General Biosecurity Obligations.

From July 2025 to June 2026 there were 139 herbicide subsidies processed to a total value of $60,480.91.
