Council and UQ launch new Community Service Award

Lockyer Valley Regional Council (LVRC) has teamed up with The University of Queensland (UQ) to establish the inaugural LVRC Community Service Award - and nominations are now open.

At the August Council Meeting, councillors were keen to jump on board the initiative, which recognises UQ students who demonstrate outstanding leadership, volunteering and community service, while strengthening connections between UQ Gatton, Council and the broader Lockyer Valley community.

Council’s Mayor Tanya Milligan said the award was something Council was keen to get involved with.

“We’re certainly encouraging nominations for the award program, which is intended to encourage community participation, strengthen connections between UQ Gatton and the local community, and support the development of future community leaders.

“As a Council, we are always keen to say thanks to those students who go above and beyond and we’re hoping this will result in even more volunteers putting their hands up, as well as leadership development opportunities and greater community engagement.

“The award will be administered by UQ, with Council participating in recipient selection, recognition, and mentoring activities.

“The successful recipient would also be provided opportunities to attend Council and community events to further develop their understanding of local governance, community leadership and civic participation, while building connections within the Lockyer Valley community,” Mayor Milligan said.

UQ Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Terry AC said the University is proud to sponsor the LVRC Community Service Award given the long association between the UQ Gatton campus and the Lockyer Valley community.

“For more than 100 years, UQ staff, students and alumni have lived and worked in the Lockyer Valley, contributing to the region as active members of the community,” Professor Terry said.

“This award builds on that legacy by encouraging and celebrating students who use their skills and talents to serve the community and reflects UQ’s The Queensland Commitment which aims to support thriving communities across the State.”

Nominations for the Awards opened on 25 September and close on 24 October. Recipient selection will take place during October and November, with successful nominees notified shortly after.

Successful recipients will receive: Formal recognition from both the University and LVRC; A 12-month mentorship with the Mayor (or delegate); Access to council-led community events and networks and connection into a broader university community engagement network.
