LVRC raises awareness for Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Lockyer Valley Regional Council staff and councillors will once again unite in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, standing in solidarity with those impacted by breast cancer.
Demonstrating its ongoing commitment to breast cancer awareness, the organisation is supporting Pinktober to help raise awareness throughout October.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month, or Pinktober, is an opportunity for staff and councillors to pay tribute to the brave women, and men, who are fighting or have lost their battle with the insidious disease that is breast cancer.
Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor, Cr Tanya Milligan said the month of October was all about shining a spotlight on early detection, research and support.
“All month, our Council will hold a range of internal fundraising efforts to support our local cancer support group, and we hope the community will get involved in fundraising too,” Mayor Milligan said.
“For many, the month signifies standing in solidarity because behind every statistic is a person.
“This is an opportunity to champion early detection, diagnosis, and treatment.
“Thanks to programs like BreastScreen Australia, which offers free mammograms to women aged 50–74, more cancers are being caught early, when treatment is most effective.
“However, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an important reminder to advocate for ourselves and others, and to support those navigating the complexities of a diagnosis.
“Our health really is our wealth, so if you’re over 40, talk to your GP about mammograms because early detection saves lives.
“Know your risk because family history matters, and genetic testing can guide personalised screening plans.
“Let’s all wear pink with purpose because this disease interrupts lives and changes families – forever.”
Staff will have the option to sport pink throughout the month, donating each time they do so to support efforts to combat the impacts of breast cancer.
“All funds raised will be forwarded directly to the Lockyer Valley Cancer Support Group, to help make a tangible difference right here in the Lockyer Valley.
“The cancer support group assists cancer patients with transport to appointments as well as providing a safe group to chat about the impacts of this disease,” Mayor Milligan said.
