Koalas are on the move – please keep watch!
Lockyer Valley residents are being encouraged to take extra care on the roads and around their homes, with increased koala activity during their breeding season.
Koalas are more active during this time of year, as they move between trees in search of a mate, sometimes crossing roads and making their way into residential properties, leaving them vulnerable to vehicle strikes and dog attacks.
Council’s Environment Portfolio Councillor Cheryl Steinhardt said there were several things residents could do to help keep koalas safe.
“Slowing down at dawn and dusk and keeping your dogs restrained can provide ways for wildlife to escape harm,” Cr Steinhardt said.
“Koalas are an iconic part of our region's natural heritage. By staying alert, taking precautions around our homes and supporting wildlife conservation, we can help ensure future generations continue to enjoy seeing koalas in the wild.
“A koala's home is more than a tree. It's a landscape that depends on all of us to keep it safe.”
Help protect koalas this breeding season by:
- Slowing down from dusk to dawn or when you see a koala or wildlife road sign
- Being alert for koalas and other wildlife crossing the road
- Keeping your dog on a leash when out and about and inside overnight (where possible)
- Placing a floating device in your pool to prevent drowning and an angled timber panel on your fence for easy escape
- Calling local wildlife carers immediately if you see a sick or injured koala
- Record koala sightings on iNaturalist or QWildlife platform
