Get Ready Week 5-11 October 2026
As we head into the high-risk season, Council is urging residents to take action and use 'Get Ready Week' to ensure they are ready for whatever may happen. How are you affected by various disaster events? Do you have a ‘What-if’ Plan? Are you prepared? The better we are all prepared, the quicker we recover when disaster strikes.
Conditions can change quickly, don’t be caught out! Preparing now for storms, flood or fire can make all the difference.
The aim of Get Ready week is to:
- Encourage Queenslanders to prepare for extreme weather
- Build community resilience - research shows people who are prepared for severe weather recover faster than those who rely solely on outside help
- Provide simple, actionable tips about how to get ready
It’s also a great time to sign up for weather notifications from the Bureau of Meteorology by downloading the BOM App and make sure you have saved a link to Council's Disaster Dashboard.

Key Actions to Get Ready
Know the hazards – Understanding the local hazards and the risk they pose to you are important first steps to being disaster ready. To understand risk, you need to know what the hazards are, how severe they might be and the likelihood of you being affected. Every property is different.
Have a plan – Once you understand the hazards, it's time to put together a plan around how your household will respond. Consider different scenarios and your individual needs – households with children will plan differently to those who are on their own. Consider other things such as disability, animals, etc. Make sure everyone knows the plan, what to do and where to go.
Pack a kit – Even if your home isn’t affected, you may be isolated due to impacts to infrastructure. No matter whether you will be at home during an emergency event or if you have to leave to a safer location, you will need to have an emergency kit. Stock up on the essentials and grab a few extra items for your kit next time you are shopping. Check out this handy list of pantry items for some ideas.
